Things You Can Do During Staycation

Salad

Staycation is a fancy term for a stay-at-home vacation and spending your time at home for a meaningful time with yourself or your family and friends. Instead of spending so much to have a break, most of the people are into doing some cheaper alternatives to make use of the time and spend a vacation.

Here are the best ideas on how to have an awesome staycation:

1. Prepare something new.
Treat yourself with a new and unconventional way of cooking a healthy meal or baking pastries. You should try and see for yourself! Search for recipes online or make your own. Who knows, you might start something wonderful and be able to start up as a food business.

2. Have a visit to a park or a plaza.
Either walking, running, or biking, it is a fun and favorable way to get there. Not only you can visit a local park or plaza, getting there through those means are good forms of exercise. Sweat it out and see the wonders you’re missing out at your place. You can also talk to the people you’ll meet there have a good conversation about news in your place.

3. Watch some movies.
You missed out all the good movies in the last half of the year? Ask for someone who has the DVDs of it and have a movie marathon at home. You could invite your friends and family too to watch it with you. Be careful inviting people who have watched the movies, they might spoil you!

4. Sleep.
Relax. Sure you are working so hard and end up in sleeping for just a bit than you actually need, then make use of the time to sleep well. What a good time to sleep without an alarm clock waking you up! Yup, you deserve it!

5. Spend time with your family and friends.
You’re missing all the updates and fun with them, don’t you? Then set a date with them. It’s a pretty good time catching up with them. Anyway, it’s not every day that you could spend time with them, so take the chance.

6. Party Hard!
Well, it’s time to bring back your night life! Prepare yourself for an all-out raving, dancing, and drinking! There are a lot of party places now especially in the metro. Hip-Hop and EDMs will certainly set your mood to an all-night fun! Go ahead.

7. Discover new places near you.
There might be newly opened restaurants, coffee shops, milk tea places, boutiques, or activity themed places near you, visit them and see for yourself. You might discover a new comfort place and a hideout for you.

8. Read.
Not actually a book worm I must say nor a fan of novels, but I still recommend reading. But hey, I am into reading too! Newspapers, magazines, online articles, and manga are also forms of reading isn’t it?

9. Join activities.
There a lot of activities that you might like to join such as fun runs, extending your help through charitable works, enroll in a program like boxing or short term culinary or photography course. You’re not just helping but also you’re going to learn a lot by doing such things.

10. Pamper yourself.
Go to the spa and have yourself the massage that your body deserves. Treat yourself with a food that you haven’t tried. It’s your time for this wonderful treat!

Install the Official Spotify Client with Dark Theme in Ubuntu 14.04

Spotify Dark Theme

The recent changes in Spotify rules of having a FREE 30 day trial for Premium account made my decision to give it a try again, now am using it for free but with the ads of course.  One thing I like is the new design using the dark theme just like the UI of Adobe products like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I hope Spotify will also add a control to select how dark the UI will be just like in some of Adobe apps.

I’m still building my playlists with the big library of music I can still listen to the music of the 90’s and I’m very thankful to Spotify for giving us this free service.

To install Spotify on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS open a new terminal and enter the following commands.

The first adds the official Spotify repository to your software sources list:
sudo sh -c ‘echo “deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list’

Add the secure key for the repository to prevent errors being thrown up:
sudo apt-key adv –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv-keys 94558F59

Finally, update and install the application:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install spotify-client-qt

Alright fire up the application and enjoy music along with the visual experience.

Tips on Communicating with the Senators of the 15th congress of the Philippines

Jean Weil in ABC studio making international phone call

A great find on how to contact the Senators of the 15th congress of the Philippines is on Github, I suppose the guy behind this is a web developer. He compiled all the communication channels of the Senators like mailing address, phone numbers, emails and website. The cool thing I like is the issue tracker that he can update it with history, another creative way of using Github.

This tips can help you get a better result in fighting for the CyberCrime Law and not just by shouting out, burst out anger. If there is anything you can add in this list feel free to do so.

  • When sending emails, make sure to send it to all the listed email addresses for each senator. You can’t be sure which ones are active and which ones aren’t.
  • Refrain from sending hate mail and other forms of personal attacks. These will not help. Consider making constructive criticism instead, and communicating why the issue is important to you.
  • If you get bounced emails or wrong numbers, leave a comment on the issue tracker so I can update this list.
  • If a senator here has no Facebook page linked, it probably means that any Facebook pages you’ll find associated with them are fake/unofficial.
  • Try to contact them through more than one medium. Facebook posts alone will not be very effective; try to at least send snail mail to their Senate office addresses. A face-to-face meeting (if you can manage it!) will have a better potential than a letter; a letter, more than a phone call; a phone call, more than an e-mail or FB/Twitter post.
  • Encourage your friends to send letters as well. The more people send in their concerns, the more you can convince senators (and their staff) that the issues you raise are relevant to their constituents.
  • When sending emails/letters:
    • Address the senators, even if your letter is most likely going to be read by his/her staff.
    • Address the senators by their full name (eg, Sen. Vicente Sotto III), not their popular name (eg, Tito Sotto).
  • When you call:
    • Direct lines are usually better than trunk lines.
    • Say your name, where you’re from, and what you’re calling about. For example: “ako po si Rico Sta Cruz mula sa Makati city. Tumatawag po ako tungkol sa isyu ng _____.”
    • Try to ask the staffer about the senator’s stance on the issue you’re calling about.
    • follow up with an email.

Support Philippine Internet Freedom Alliance Online Protest

Show your support for the Internet Freedom and Freedom of Speech in the Philippines spread this message that the government will take actions to review the Cybercrime Law ʀᴀ ɴᴏ. 10175. I also got this information on Facebook and Twitter and I’m just sharing it here on my blog. Here is one example of the call to action.

TODAY, 02 October 2012, the Supreme Court sitting en banc is set to hear several petitions for prohibition against the Cybercrime Prevention Law.

If the high court junks these petitions and disapproves the request for a temporary restraining order (TRO), the Cybercrime Prevention Law will take effect the following day, forever changing the Internet landscape in the Philippines — possibly even killing Internet freedom.

As a sign of protest, please take down your profile pictures and cover photos and change it to a simple black image.

We also call on website administrators in the Philippines to take down/blacken their websites starting 12 midnight in protest of the looming implementation of the draconian law. There are several plugins available in the net to do so (GIYF).

With enough websites participating, we can be a formidable force that can compel the government to think twice.

If you’re active on social media you can change your social media profiles and show your friends, followers about this law suppressing Internet freedom. If you have your own website or blog follow the instructions here on how to participate on Website Blackout Protest self hosted blogs, Blogger and Tumblr is supported by the script.
